For the past several months, I have been studying a post-grad MSc Marketing with Salford Business School while currently working for the family business as Head of Business Development. As a career choice, business development is an exciting profession as it offers one a chance to be innovative, engage in strategy planning and shape the fortunes of an enterprise. In Zimbabwe, it often involves a lot of resource management as most companies are looking towards cutting costs and managing their resources in such a way that they can increase profits or their portion of an increasingly shrinking cake.
During my time with Salford Business School, I have learned a lot that I have also used to apply in my current job especially in terms of marketing itself and having a broader view of the subject matter. For one, I now recognise how important it is to have the whole organisation involved in the entirety of the marketing process. All members of the organisation are one way or the other, marketers and hence should be made aware this and be involved in the organisation’s marketing strategy.
